MSpectrum, Inc., the wholly owned solar subsidiary of the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco), has teamed up with Japan-based Tokyo Century Corporation (TC) and JFE Engineering Corporation (JFEE) to develop, own, and operate solar rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects for industrial facilities across the Philippines.
Through a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA), the three companies established MSpectrum Taiyo Inc., a new company that combines MSpectrum’s local market presence in solar energy, backed by Meralco’s expertise in electricity, along with TC’s global financing expertise, and JFEE’s engineering and renewable energy experience.
Under the agreement, MSpectrum will hold a 60% equity stake in the joint venture, while TC and JFEE will hold 30% and 10%, respectively.
The partnership aims to accelerate the solar energy adoption of Japanese enterprises, tapping opportunities in the country’s growing commercial and industrial solar market.
“Beyond supporting the growth of our organizations, this partnership aims to contribute to the country’s broader energy transition by expanding access to clean and reliable energy solutions, helping businesses manage energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance their long-term competitiveness,” MSpectrum Chairman Ronnie L. Aperocho said.
The collaboration builds on a longstanding relationship among the partners that began in 2018 through Japan’s Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) program. Through the initiative, several solar power purchase agreement (PPA) projects were successfully implemented between 2019 and 2021 with support from the Japanese government.
“In the Philippines, rapid economic growth has led to rising electricity demand and an urgent need for renewable energy. Introducing clean energy while reducing costs has become an important priority for many Japanese companies operating in the country. Through MSpectrum Taiyo, we aim to provide reliable and sustainable solar solutions that help address these needs,” TC Senior Managing Executive Officer and Global Business Unit President Toshio Kitamura said.
JFEE, one of Japan’s leading engineering companies, will contribute its extensive experience in energy and infrastructure projects, including more than 100 MW of solar PPA projects in Japan and a strong presence in the Philippines through its affiliated companies and water and wastewater projects.
“This joint venture will provide clean energy to Japanese companies operating in the Philippines through solar PPA solutions. As demand for carbon neutrality continues to grow, we believe this collaboration will help businesses achieve their sustainability goals while contributing to a more sustainable,” JFEE Managing Director and Head of the Power Business Division Atsushi Kobayashi said.
For Meralco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Manuel V. Pangilinan, the joint venture underscores the value of bringing together trusted partners with a shared vision for innovation and sustainable growth.
“It is this combination of strengths that allows us to deliver more reliable, more efficient, and more scalable solar solutions to commercial and industrial customers in the Philippines—helping businesses become more productive, more competitive, and better prepared for the future,” Pangilinan said.
