MERALCO ON ALERT FOR POSSIBLE IMPACT OF SUPER TYPHOON INDAY, SOUTHWEST MONSOON

MANILA, PHILIPPINES 08 JULY 2026 – The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has assured its customers that its personnel are ready to respond to power outages that may result from heavy rains and strong winds brought about by Super Typhoon Inday (international name: Bavi) and the enhanced southwest monsoon.

Meralco is closely monitoring weather updates as state weather bureau PAGASA warned of possible heavy rainfall and strong to gale-force winds that may affect the company’s franchise area.

“As a 24-hour service company, our crews are ready to attend to any possible electricity service concern in areas that might be affected by the inclement weather,” Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga said.

Meralco has put in place necessary measures to mitigate the possible impact of monsoon rains, including issuance of advisories on appropriate precautionary measures.

“Meralco has consistently requested billboard owners and operators to temporarily roll up their billboards to prevent these structures from being toppled by the strong winds,” Zaldarriaga said.

To help ensure safety during adverse weather conditions, Meralco reminds customers to observe the following electrical safety tips, especially in case of flooding:

  • Turn off the main power switch or circuit breaker. Make sure hands and feet are dry before touching any electrical equipment.
  • Unplug all appliances and turn off permanently connected devices. Remove light bulbs if possible.
  • Clean mud and debris from electrical equipment using rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes.
  • Ensure all electrical wires, outlets, and devices are completely dry before use.
  • Have a licensed electrician inspect appliances and wiring systems before turning them back on. Never use flood-damaged electrical equipment.

Zaldarriaga also urged the public to keep all channels of communication open and ready and charge mobile phones, laptops, radios, and other communication gadgets. Customers may tune in to the different public service radio stations should power interruptions occur.

To report electricity service concerns, customers may reach Meralco through its official social media pages on Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and X (@meralco). They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 and 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211.
