Manila, Philippines – Hailing from the picturesque province of La Union to the Flores-Zafra-Villa-Cariaso clan, Joanne Cariaso-Gacayan mounts her maiden solo exhibition. “Enlace” intricately merges the themes of “binding” and “lace” to poignantly depict the profound relationship between mother and child. Through a collection of candid portrayals spanning various life stages, she masterfully encapsulates this bond, weaving it with delicate lace motifs in vibrant watercolor compositions on archival paper.
The exhibition also pays homage to the influential women who have shaped her life, both as mothers and individuals, alongside still-life depictions that evoke nostalgic memories of maternal figures from our collective past. Ultimately, “Enlace” stands as a heartfelt tribute to the profound impact of parental bonds in shaping our very identities, adorned with the artist’s signature loose strokes and jubilant use of color.
Joanne Gacayan is a member of the Artists Guild of La Union (AGLAUN) and currently holds the esteemed position of president of the Philippine Guild of Watercolorists, the nation’s largest watercolor organization.
