A confluence of art and friendship in Robinsons Land ARTablado show

Hidden within the words “vibrant” and “variety” is the word “art,” a subtle yet powerful reminder of what art ideally embodies.

Four artists, who are friends actually, know this only too well. Their four-man exhibit titled “Sari-Sari,” currently on view at Robinsons Land ARTablado, stands as a testament not only to the power of individual creativity but also to the unbreakable bonds forged through a shared passion for art.

The show’s title, “Sari-Sari,” draws inspiration from the quintessential Filipino convenience store that offers a diverse array of goods in a small, unassuming space. Similarly, this exhibition brings together the unique styles and perspectives of four artists — Sarah Liuson-Ongsun, Joanne Cariaso-Gacayan, Cher Cabula-Mendoza, and Nina Tolentino-Hidalgo — each contributing their distinct voice to create a rich, eclectic mix that invites viewers to explore the depths of their collective and individual experiences.

The origins of this artistic collaboration trace back to the Philippine Guild of Watercolorists, where the artists first crossed paths. United by their love for watercolor, their friendship blossomed in the crucible of creative challenges and shared endeavors. “We met while volunteering,” recalls Sarah. “Working together at events brought us closer, one stressful day at a time.”

The journey from mere acquaintances to close-knit friends was not without its trials. Yet, it was precisely these challenges that solidified their bond, transforming it into something more akin to family. “What started as a mutual passion for the arts has blossomed into a profound and familial friendship, with art serving as the heart of our bond,” Joanne reflects.

Each artist in the “Sari-Sari” exhibit brings a unique perspective to the table, creating a diverse yet harmonious blend of styles and subjects.

Sarah Liuson-Ongsun, who discovered her passion for watercolor in 2015, finds joy in capturing the subtleties of everyday life. Her work, which ranges from still lifes to evocative landscapes, serves as a visual time capsule of her experiences. “Whether it’s a still life arrangement, a portrait, or everyday scenes, I approach each painting with a deep appreciation for the beauty found in the ordinary,” she explains.

Joanne Cariaso-Gacayan, on the other hand, returned to her artistic roots after a dynamic career in store design and visual merchandising. Her watercolor works, celebrated for their playful strokes and vibrant hues, reflect a deep connection to the themes she explores. Joanne’s ability to infuse her art with profound messages has earned her spots in exhibitions in Singapore, Japan, and France.

Rochelle “Cher” Cabula-Mendoza, a University of the Philippines graduate, has not only made her mark as an interior designer but also as a passionate artist. Cher’s work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions, putting a spotlight on the artist’s skillful use of watercolor to depict both intimate and grand subjects. She is also known for her active involvement in various art organizations, where she continues to inspire fellow artists through her leadership and advocacy.

Nina Tolentino-Hidalgo, the fourth member of this creative quartet, brings a unique dimension to the exhibit with her miniature paintings. Despite the small scale of her works, Nina’s art is anything but diminutive in its impact. Her pieces, meticulously crafted and bursting with detail, invite viewers to pause and appreciate the intricacies of the world in miniature form.

Beyond the individual contributions, “Sari-Sari” is a celebration of the artists’ collective journey. It is a reflection of how their friendship, much like their art, has evolved over time, shaped by shared experiences, mutual support, and an unyielding dedication to their craft. “Art is the glue that binds us,” Nina muses. “Through art, we get to know each other more deeply.”

This exhibition is not merely a display of paintings; it is a narrative of how art can transcend its role as a form of expression to become a medium for building meaningful relationships. “While friendship and art might not be essential for just getting by, they make life so much richer,” says Joanne. In “Sari-Sari,” art and friendship are interwoven, each enriching the other and providing a deeper context for the works on display. The theme that resonates within the works is the affinity with nature.

Sarah explains, “Just as someone might capture a beautiful view with a photograph, we paint in response to the wonder of creation. There’s something magical about immersing ourselves in a scene for 30 minutes, an hour, or even two. During this time, we notice details we might otherwise overlook, weaving them into our memories, stroke by stroke.”

“We also cherish coming together to paint. Each time we gather, we can’t resist the urge to create, just as we do when we explore nature on our own. Painting with nature as our muse brings us endless joy and inspiration. And when we add friends, food, and stories into the mix, every moment spent is truly worth it,” added Joanne.

The decision to hold their debut group exhibition at ARTablado was a natural choice for these artists, who found in the gallery a partner that shares their vision of inclusivity and artistic encouragement.

“ARTablado takes good care of its artists,” Cher notes, emphasizing the gallery’s supportive role in their artistic journey. “We love that ARTablado lets us work on our art and the people behind it support us by giving us a venue that is accessible and open to their clientele. They are also not discriminating and very friendly even to us first-time group exhibitors.”

Nina agrees. “We chose to hold our first show together at ARTablado because we believe that it upholds the same vision that we have when it comes to encouraging people to do more and be more.”

For these artists, being allowed to experiment and indulge in creative exploration is essential. An art space like Robinsons Land ARTablado encourages this spirit, offering a platform where artists from all walks of life can freely express their unique visions and push the boundaries of their craft. By providing a supportive environment, ARTablado fosters innovation and allows artists to take risks, experiment with new techniques, and develop their personal styles without the constraints often found in more traditional settings. This nurturing space not only helps artists grow but also enriches the broader art community by introducing diverse perspectives and fresh, original works.

Joanne was impressed with the organizers’ warmth and professionalism. “This experience sparked our own dream of holding a show there, and we’re deeply grateful to ARTablado for trusting us and helping make that dream a reality.”

The “Sari-Sari” exhibit is more than just a showcase of talent; it is a celebration of the collaborative spirit. It is a reminder that while each artist’s work can stand alone, it is in coming together that their art finds new meaning and resonance. In a world where art often reflects the solitary pursuit of personal vision, “Sari-Sari” stands out as a refreshing reminder of the joys of collective creativity.

Sari-Sari” is on view until Sept 15 at Robinsons Land ARTablado, Level 3 of Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas Center.
