MERALCO FILES CRIMINAL CASE AGAINST INDIVIDUALS BEHIND VIRAL METER REMOVAL INCIDENT

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, 16 APRIL 2026—The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has filed a criminal complaint against individuals involved in the unauthorized removal of an electric meter, which was caught on video and drew attention on social media.

The incident, which occurred on April 8, 2026 in a subdivision in Rodriguez, Rizal, clearly showed a man forcibly removing a resident’s electric meter despite the homeowner’s objections and without presenting any proof of identity or authorization.

Meralco immediately responded to the incident and found out that the individual was acting on orders of the property owner.

The distribution utility has also formally filed the criminal complaint for Malicious Mischief before the Rizal Provincial Prosecution Office against two (2) individuals, citing deliberate damage to the company’s property.

Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga warned the public against the unauthorized removal of electric meters. He further enjoined the public to remain cautious of individuals falsely posing as Meralco personnel.

Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga said the company immediately acted to restore the electricity service of the customer and conducted an investigation upon learning the incident.

“We would like to emphasize once again that electric meters are property of Meralco and any unauthorized removal or damage is illegal and subject to legal action,” Zaldarriaga said.

He further enjoined the public to remain cautious of individuals falsely posing as Meralco personnel.

“We once again remind the public that all legitimate Meralco employees and contractors are in uniform with company ID, carry official field orders, and use clearly marked vehicles,” Zaldarriaga said.

“We also urge the public to immediately report these illegal activities to us and to the proper authorities. We will continue to work closely with authorities to address illegal acts and protect the welfare of our customers,” he concluded.

Customers can report their electricity service concerns through the My Meralco app or through Meralco’s official social media accounts on Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and X formerly Twitter (@meralco). They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211.
